Prof. Philip Coppens, SUNY Distinguished Emeritus Professor, has received the 2013 Kolos Medal and Lecture Award in recognition of his pioneering achievements in crystallography. A ceremony is scheduled to take place on Sept. 16, 2013 during the LVI Conference of the Polish Chemical Society in Siedlce.

Prof. Andrew Murkin wins a prestigious NSF CAREER Award
Chemistry alumna Dr. Allison Campbell, a distinguished graduate of the UB Chemistry Ph.D. program (Ph.D. studies with SUNY Distinguished Professor George H. Nancollas), has been named a 2012 fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). According to AAAS, “Election as a Fellow of AAAS is an honor bestowed upon members by their peers. Fellows are recognized for meritorious efforts to advance science or its applications.” We congratulate Dr. Campbell, who serves as Director, WR Wiley Environmental Molecular Sciences Laboratory at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory.
The Jane C. Denton Endowment Award — Jane Denton was a courageous woman, who received her BA (’66) and MA (’90) in chemistry from UB. Ms. Denton passed away in 2010 and two of her classmates initiated a merit-based student award in her honor. Should the endowment increase to an appropriate level, a Jane Denton Lectureship in Chemistry will be established.

Diane Youker, a graduate student in Prof. Watson’s group, has received the Department of Energy’s Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE) Postdoctoral Research Fellowship Award. She will do postdoctoral research at the Institute of Energy Conversion at the University of Delaware.

Dr. Christine Ingersoll (UB-Chemistry Alumna, Bright group) one of the recipients of the inaugural Rising Star Award by the ACS Women Chemist Committee presented at the March 26 ACS National meeting (C&EN April 16, 2012, p47).
Prof. Luis A. Colon receives the 2012 Geoffrey Marshall Mentoring Award from the Northeastern Association of Graduate Schools (NAGS). The award was presented April 20, 2012 in Halifax, Nova Scotia at the NAGS annual meeting.
Prof. Joseph A. Gardella, Jr. wins the UB University Community Partners Award for his highly engaged community-based and academically connected research associated with the UB/Buffalo Schools Interdisciplinary Science and Engineering Partnership. The award will be presented June 13th at the annual UB Partners Day at the Buffalo Convention Center.
Sarina Dorazio from the Morrow group was selected to receive the Eli Lilly Travel Award, a highly competitive award administered by the Women Chemists Committee of the ACS, providing funding to travel to a national meeting to present her research work. Sarina presented her work at a Gordon Research Conference.
Chris Patridge, a recent graduate from the Banerjee group, has been awarded the 2012 Julian David Baumert Ph.D. Thesis Award by the National Synchrotron Light Source in recognition to his research at UB-CHE. He is the first UB student to receive this award. He is now a NRC Post-Doctoral Fellow at the Naval Research Laboratory.

Prof. Luis A. Colon wins the 2012 A.A. Benedetti-Pichler Award in Microchemistry by the American Microchemical Society for outstanding research in the field of microchemistry. The award will be presented at the Eastern Analytical Symposium in Somerset, NJ in November 2012.

Graduate student Susan MacKintosh (Aga’s group) is a finalist in the NSF IGERT poster competition and will go to Washington, DC to present the poster at NSF. The top 10 finalists will receive a $3,000 travel award and the other 14 finalists will receive a $1,000 travel award.
Graduate student David Lonie (Zurek’s Group) was awarded a prominent scholarship from Google, the “Google Summer of Code” – he will implement tools to visualize molecular systems.
Graduate student Diane G. Youker (Watson’s Group) awarded the National Science Foundation EAPSI 2011 summer fellowship to spend the summer at the University of Tsukuba in Japan doing research on time-resolved spectroscopy.
